PROGRAM INFO- PADDLING and SWIMMING
Banook Caone Club is a family orientated club with a paddling program
that attempts to fulfill the requirements of all its members. Paddling is the
focus of club activities and all children are encouraged to participate in
paddling at a level in which they are comfortable.
Participation and skill
development is the focus of the paddling program from Kiddie Canoe to Masters.
General Paddling Information
Paddling is divided into small boats( canoes and kayaks) and war canoe(
14 paddlers and a cox), with paddlers grouped according to their age and skill
level.
Club boats and paddles are available to members during practice time.
Paddles are not permitted to use boats outside their scheduled program hours.
There are a few “high performance” boats which are only available to more
experienced paddlers. Boat access is under the discretion of the Head Coach and
the Paddling Committee.
Banook Canoe Club
is committed to offering every athlete the opportunity to participate in local
regattas. We are a member of the Canadian Canoe Association and compete in the Atlantic and National Championship each year.
Water Safety
The Canadian
Canoe Association (CCA) requires all paddlers to pass a standard swim test.
Typically the test consists of (but may not limited to) swimming from the
Banook docks to the finish line and back, treading water for five minutes and
performing a tip, turn and tow exercise in a canoe or kayak. It is important
for parents to realize that this test is a crucial part of the safety net set
up for young paddlers. The CCA and the Canadian Coast Guard set out minimum
on-water safety requirements. All Atom age participants will be required to
wear PFDs at all times while on the water. Peewee and Bantam participants are required
to wear life belts at all times while on the water. For further information,
see the Canadian Canoe Association Code of Safety.

PADDLlNG PROGRAM
The day program is supervised by
the Head Paddling Coach Troy Comeau and his assistant coaches. Participants are
required to pass a swim test to show their swimming ability and water safety
knowledge. The swim tests take place during the Club’s orientation day at the
beginning of the program. Each week’s lessons follow the guidelines of the
Canoekids program. All registered paddlers must wear a CSA approved PDF (8-12
year olds are required to wear a life jacket, 13-14 year olds can wear a
lifebelt). Paddlers (peewee age and up) who wish to compete must wear a racing
singlet. Buns needed for war canoe can also be purchased in the office, as can
racing singlets and other Banook
apparel. The paddling coaches’ office is for staff only and is located next to
the Manager’s office.
* The CanoeKids program falls into the SportCanada category called the
“Community Sport Stream”. The curriculum is a learn-to-paddle program aimed at
children aged 8 to 13. Its primary focus is the development of life-long
paddling skills in a noncompetitive environment for these children. The entire
program is aimed at imparting real skill development in a physically demanding
sport, within the context of social, relaxed and ‘fun’ activities. Secondarily,
the program is used as recruitment for the racing programs at CanoeKayak Clubs.
Practices are only cancelled in
extreme weather conditions, such as high winds or thunderstorms, in which case
dryland training will be held.
KIDDIE CANOE / KAYAK
Each summer, children between the
ages of 4 and 7 are offered the chance to become familiar with paddling and
water safety. Participants will use war canoes, the dragon boat, and mini
kayaks. Life jackets/PFDs must be worn at all times. T-shirts are available for
purchase. Days and times will be posted in the breezeway.
DRAGON BOAT FAMILY NIGHT
The Dragon Boat will be available
for family groups under the supervision of a member of the paddling staff. This is a
great family activity and we encourage all members to try it out. The schedule
for this weekly event will be posted soon.
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
